How to Make Great-Tasting Coffee — Every Time

Few things are worse than taking that first sip of coffee expecting Java jubilation only to find that it falls flat. Perhaps you didn’t use the right ratio of water to coffee or used old beans from the back of the cupboard. Here are some of the things that can make your morning cup of Joe bitter, unpleasant and bleh! (And ways to prevent this horror from happening in your break room or kitchen!)tel:18004482739great tasting coffee with laptop on wooden desk

  • Microwaving. Say it with me, “Stop microwaving your coffee.” Did you know that coffee starts to lose its flavor the minute it’s picked? Instead, brew as you go. Getting your office coffee from BostonbeaN ensures your employees have a fresh, great-tasting cup of coffee every time. From cold brew to touchless options, you can supply your employees with the perfect blend. And getting a fresh cup always trumps a microwave warm up!
  • Using old or improperly stored grounds or beans. Properly stored coffee can stay fresh in your cupboard for months. Store coffee in canisters that allow the beans to de-gas. Roasting coffee beans produces carbon dioxide, which can leave your brew bitter if you store your beans improperly.
  • Using poor-quality water at the wrong temperature. Using water that’s too hot causes over-extraction and an overpowering taste. Using water that’s too cold causes under-extraction and coffee that has no taste. So, what’s the perfect temperature for coffee brewing? We recommend a temperature of 205 F. Additionally, it’s important to only use water that you would drink directly from the source. BostonbeaN offers TopWater to bring fresh, filtered water to your office and coffee break, along with other water systems including the Bevi and the Ion Bottleless Water Cooler.cup of great tasting coffee
  • Not using top-notch brewers. Sometimes, you can use inexpensive equipment to produce a great cup of coffee. That’s certainly true with making espresso using traditional methods. However, it’s difficult to get the consistency and accuracy promised with a quality machine. If you find a workaround, that’s great. However, in the office, where time is money, it may be time to invest in a quality machine that provides your employees with great coffee to fuel them through the day.
  • Try a different level of roast— From light to dark roast, at BostonbeaN, we provide a range of roast types so that your employees can choose the one that pleases their palates the best.

Looking Ahead to 2022: Here’s What’s Brewing in the Coffee and Tea Industry

While the legends surrounding the discovery of coffee differ, many believe that a herder named Kaldi was the first to understand the power of the beloved bean. He noticed that after eating from a coffee plant, his goats were so energetic that they struggled to sleep at night.

From shots of espresso to pumpkin spice lattes to piping hot chai, the way we consume coffee and tea has evolved over time. Much has changed in the past few years, but coffee is here to stay. In 2021, 60% of people reported drinking coffee in the past day. Here, we’ll take a look at the trends coffee and tea lovers can expect to see as we move into 2022.

BostonbeaN Keeps Up With the Cold-Brew Craze

How did cold-brew coffee become so popular? It all began in the 1600s. First, Dutch sailors began using the brewing process, inspired by the Japanese method of cold-brewing teas. Then, Cuba revisited the cold brew with iced coffee in the ’30s. The Toddy Brewing System hit the market in the ’60s.

Fast-forward to the 2000s and cold brew was championed by innovative coffee shops because the smooth, cold-brew flavor blended beautifully with milk, ice, syrups, and flavorings.

cold-brew crazeCold Brew Vs. Iced Coffee

The difference between cold brew and iced coffee is that the latter is made through a hot brewing process, completed at double strength, and then poured over ice. But when hot coffee cools, the acids can be harsh, while cold brewing avoids the acid development. Furthermore, hot brewed coffees usually have a brewing ratio of 1 part coffee to 16 parts water, while cold brew’s ratio is 1 to 8.

Cold brew coffee requires coffee beans and water along with knowledge and time. The beans — usually coarsely ground — are steeped in cold water in an extraction process that takes from 12 to 24 hours. Customizable as a concentrate, cold-brewed coffee uses time in place of temperature, with caffeine increased by the coffee-to-water ratio or brewing duration. This slow, cold brew imparts a less acidic, more smooth and mellow taste.

Cold-Brew Benefits

According to research by Harvard University, fans of cold-brew coffee enjoy a refreshing caffeinated cold beverage that equals hot coffee’s health and energy benefits. It offers more subtle flavor notes while having 65 percent less acidity. It also provides customization, convenience, and a mellow and nuanced taste.

Like all coffee beverages, cold brew imparts health benefits, increasing blood flow to the brain, supporting cognitive function, decreasing the risk of dementia, and packing free-radical and cancer-fighting chemicals.

Celebrate National Coffee Day by Spicing up Your Caffeine Routine

Although at BostonBeaN we believe every day is coffee day, the official National Coffee Day is Sept. 29. As a routine part of many people’s mornings, we salute our favorite energizing berry in its glorious liquid form.

The commonly known origin story of coffee begins in Ethiopia with a goat herder named Kaldi. He observed goats eating berries that made them energetic and kept them from sleeping at night. Fast forward to today, and coffee is a global favorite.

National Coffee Day was first celebrated in Japan in 1893. It initially aimed to promote fair trade and bring awareness to the needs of coffee farmers. What better way to celebrate the rich history of coffee than trying something new?

national coffee dayStep Up Your Coffee Game and Try Something New

Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to a superb cup of coffee. However, coffee enthusiasts and experts agree that there are four essential components to the perfect cup: acidity, aroma, body and flavor. That is all they can agree on, though, as everyone has different taste interests.

Switch It Up Before You Brew

Your new favorite flavor combination can begin before you even add water. Elevate the entire pot by mixing different dry ingredients and thoroughly incorporating them into your coffee grounds. Some great and possibly lesser-known ingredients include:

  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Spices
  • Extracts
  • Salt

These additions can influence the depth, warmth, tone and texture of your coffee, and all before you personalize your cup!

Make a Truly Unique Cup of Coffeenational coffee day

There are a variety of ways to add more dimension to an existing cup of coffee. The most obvious way might be to add cream and sugar, but the possibilities of what you can add are limitless. You can change things up by trying different types of sugar or experimenting with different flavors or types of creamers. You can even add flavored syrup or ice cream for a sweet drink! If you are more adventurous, you can opt for coffee additions popular in niche groups and international crowds. For example, give egg or butter a try in your coffee this National Coffee Day!

Spice up your office coffee experience for your employees with options like touchless coffee machines, cold brew and Nespresso machines, as well as prepackaged snacks and grab-and-go food. At BostonBeaN, we can help you spice up your coffee routine. Call us today at (781) 935-3100 or send an email to orders@hitbrew.com.

Dark, Medium or Light Roast? Time and Temperature Make the Difference

There is nothing quite like a cup of java in the morning. You can smell it now, can’t you? That delicious fragrance and distinct taste are one of a kind.

But, coffee is anything but uniform. While there’s unbounded variety, in simplest terms, your coffee will be either a dark, medium or light roast.

Let’s take a look at each type of roast to understand your favorite cup of coffee a little better.

dark, medium, or light roast coffeeDark Roast: The Boldest of the Bunch

True to its name, the beans of a dark roast have a dark chocolate hue and generally an oily surface. These beans are roasted longer and at higher temperatures than those of other roasts, up to 430-450 degrees Fahrenheit and until the second cracking sounds of the beans are heard. As a result of this increased heat for a longer duration, they lose moisture, density and acidity and develop a bitter and bold taste.

Dark roasts actually have less caffeine than their counterparts. While a cup of dark roast coffee will have the boldest flavor, it will lack the same potency.

Medium Roast: The Happy Balance

A medium roast finds itself in between dark and light roasts in nearly all aspects. The beans have a semi-dark color and lack any oil on their surface. The taste of a medium roast is considered balanced — not too strong and just slightly sweet.

The beans are roasted until 400-430 degrees Fahrenheit and their first cracking sound, which is a temperature and duration between that of dark and light roasts. The caffeine content, acidity and aroma are also in between the two.

A medium roast is essentially the Goldilocks of coffee and is well-suited for java drinkers seeking a balance of gentleness, boldness and caffeine kick.

Light Roast: Peaceful Yet Potentdark, medium, or light roast coffee

Light roast beans are roasted at the lowest temperatures and for the shortest length of time, at 380-400 degrees Fahrenheit and just before the first crack of the bean. This results in a light brown color and no oil on their surface.

Compared to those of medium and dark roasts, lightly roasted beans retain much of their original flavor, density, moisture, acidity and caffeine as a result of their relatively minimal roasting. The flavor is gentler but is often considered more nuanced — herbal or fruity overtones can be detected stemming from the bean’s origins. Light roasts also have the most complexity and versatility with respect to aromas.

Iced Coffee, Cold Brew and Nitro Are Not Your Average Cup of Joe

You love coffee — and so do we! Whether hot, cold, black, or with cream and sugar, there is never a wrong time for a cup of Joe.

The summertime is the perfect time for a cold coffee beverage. You may want an iced coffee, cold brew or nitro cold brew. But what exactly is the difference?

Iced Coffee

Iced coffee is made with hot coffee brewed at double strength and poured over ice. Because the ice melts as the drink is poured, the coffee needs to be stronger than a hot cup of coffee.

Due to a rapid change in the temperature, it is more bitter and acidic than its cold-brewed counterparts. It also spoils the fastest of the cold coffee drinks, experiencing the degradation of flavor after 30 minutes. However, iced coffee is known for its medium-bodied and well-balanced flavor.

Cold Brew

Cold brew is brewed by steeping ground coffee in cold water for 12-24 hours. The longer steeping process allows the beverage to have two to three times the caffeine compared to hot or iced coffee.

Cold brew is less acidic and slightly sweet; it has a smooth and full-bodied flavor. Unlike iced coffee, cold brew can stay fresh for up to two weeks in the refrigerator.

Nitro Cold Brew

Nitro has the same brewing process as cold brew. The difference is in the delivery. Kegged, the cold brew is infused with nitrogen bubbles. This process creates a rich and creamy texture. Like cold brew, it has two to three times more caffeine than iced and hot coffee.

iced coffee, cold brew and nitro are not your average cup of joeWho the Heck Is Joe?

A cup of coffee was not always called a “cup of Joe.” While there is not one clear origin story as to where the phrase comes from, here are a couple of them to consider:

  • A cup of Josephus Daniels: One theory states the term comes from Woodrow Wilson’s Secretary of the Navy, Josephus Daniels, after banning alcohol aboard naval vessels. As a result, the strongest drink allowed on ships became coffee.
  • Average Joe: Another theory suggests the term comes from the term “average Joe,” as coffee is considered an everyman’s drink.

Not Your Average Cup of Joe

Regardless of its origins, we all know there is nothing average about a great cup of coffee. Are you ready to deliver the distinction of a coffee shop to your workplace? Let BostonbeaN help you go above and beyond for your employees.

Science Supports Cold Brew Benefits

Cold brew offers numerous benefits similar to traditional hot coffee, as it contains caffeine. Caffeine—in moderation—has been shown to boost metabolism, which raises your metabolic rate up to 11%. This means you’ll burn more calories even while at rest. Another great aspect of cold brew coffee is that it tends to be easier on the stomach, which is one reason many people with indigestion, ulcers, acid reflux and heartburn often avoid coffee.

It’s no secret that tired and sleep deprived individuals feel better after their morning caffeine fix, and cold brew consumption might improve one’s state of mind. Studies have shown a strong correlation between the lessening of depression and drinking coffee, and some researchers suggest caffeine supplements can boost mental wellness in older adults.

One of the most amazing benefits that could be reaped from cold brew is reducing your risks of developing heart disease. This is thought to be a result from the presence of caffeine along with phenolic compounds, lignans, magnesium and trigonelline. These compounds naturally lower blood pressure and help stabilize blood sugar. Cold brew coffee also contains antioxidants including diterpenes and chlorogenic acids that serve as anti-inflammatory agents.

Nespresso Offers Flavors to Please Every Palate

Coffee breaks are one of people’s favorite parts of the day, but taking trips to the coffee shop can get expensive for the employee – and their employer. By the time a person leaves the office, heads to the coffee shop, stands in line and comes back, it’s way beyond the allotted 15-minute break. That’s why offices should consider upgrading that old, standard coffee brewer in the break room.

Two of the most popular machines for the office are the touchless Nespresso Momento 100 and the Nespresso Momento 120 .

With the Nespresso 100, you can order coffee by simply using an app and scanning a QR code on the machine. There are 13 espresso varieties including americanos, espressos, and lattes. Flavor and Variety Options

Espresso shots are available in varying levels of intensity, ranging from 1 to 12. They come in single-serve aluminum capsules that are sealed to guarantee freshness for up to a year. Below are descriptions of the flavors and intensity levels, sure to satisfy all your employees’ varied tastes.

The Truth About Coffee — Facts and Myths Surrounding Your Beloved Cup o’ Java

There are many myths about coffee that have been passed along through the years, and we’re going to set the record straight on a few of them.

There’s nothing quite like starting the day with a fresh cup of coffee. And while some may refer to their coffee consumption as a vice, more evidence is pointing to the opposite conclusion. Drinking coffee in moderation can have a positive impact on your health.

Keeping Your Coffee Fresh and Your Story Straight

What do people say when they want to get together with friends? “Let’s go out for coffee.” It’s a social beverage that helps keep people energized and moving, whether it’s from that one morning cup, or from a few cups scattered throughout the day. Let’s take a look at some common myths and find out the truth about coffee.

Q: Is coffee bad for your health?

A: Studies have shown drinking up to four cups of coffee a day can actually reduce the risk of many diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. It has been linked to anti-aging properties, and may even reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s Disease. Like anything, coffee should be enjoyed with moderation. And if you are pregnant, older or have health conditions like high blood pressure, consult your doctor for personalized advice on daily caffeine intake.

Q: Is coffee addictive?

A: While regular use of caffeine can cause a mild physical dependence, it is relatively easy to quit or reduce your consumption if you choose. Withdrawal symptoms are usually short-lived, and practically non-existent if you taper off gradually.

Q: Will coffee dehydrate you?

A: Although coffee can act as a mild diuretic, it does not dehydrate you because there’s so much water in a cup of coffee.

Q: Does coffee make you lose weight?

A: While coffee is not a weight-loss product, it can delay appetite for a short while. A perfect time to grab a cup might just be right before that meeting with the tempting donuts…

Q: Will a cup of coffee sober you up?

A:  It’s a myth that coffee will sober you up after drinking alcohol. Even if you feel more alert, coffee will not improve reaction time and judgment behind the wheel.

Q: Will an afternoon cup of coffee cause insomnia?

A: For most people, sleep will not be affected if they stop drinking coffee within six hours of going to bed. So go ahead and have that afternoon pick-me-up!

Q: Should I store my coffee in the refrigerator or freezer?

A: No. Coffee is best stored away from light, heat and moisture, so the standard “cool, dry place” is best.

Contact BostonbeaN for all the options to brew a high-end, café-quality cup of coffee that will make your employees happy (even in the afternoon!). We source the best products to stock your company break room with quality coffee, tea drinks, and snack products
